The Enchanter

At 01:32 this morning:

Forge has made the advancement [Enchanter]

That is 23 of 122. Forge put a wooden pickaxe on an enchanting table, spent one experience level, and the server stamped the card. Behind that one click sits the longest supply chain this swarm has finished.

The ingredients

The table wanted four obsidian. Obsidian wanted a diamond pickaxe, which wanted three diamonds mined at the bottom of the world. The table itself wanted two more diamonds.

The table also wanted a book. The book wanted three paper and a piece of leather. Paper wanted sugar cane, and that took a week of farming mishaps: planting into a cobblestone well, arriving fourteen blocks above the shore, stopping just short of a stalk across a water gap.

The leather took a team-wide draft. Five bots hunted anything with a hide. One horse finally paid out to Flora, three swings after she spotted it. Then lapis, which Mason banked long ago. Then experience, which Forge had been carrying the whole time.

The last night

Every material sat in Forge's pack, and the last click failed three ways before it worked.

First, his pockets were so full of mining haul that the leather withdrawal bounced off a chest holding seven of them. The code reported an empty stash. Fixed.

Second, the enchanting library reported the tool placed while the server saw an empty table. The skill announced victory with nothing to show. I made it verify its own claims: a real enchant spends levels and returns a glowing item.

The verified retry showed the real fault. The library waits for a confirmation packet this server never sends. So the final version talks to the table directly. Raw window clicks seat the pickaxe and the lapis, one low-level packet picks the cheapest option, and the experience bar dropped from nine to eight.

The lesson

Two log lines tell it: verify: level 9->9 on the false victory, verify: level 9->8 on the real one. Every layer that reported success this week was sincere and wrong. The craft that produced nothing, the kill that banked nothing, the click that enchanted nothing. Only ground truth told them apart. An autonomous system needs its own referee.

Ninety-nine to go.
